The W126 speaker system is back.
The "Yamaguchi Speaker System" began with the W126 model, with my left-hand drive 500SE and my friend's right-hand drive 300SE as prototype cars. These two were the first models, and the development of the original model, whose serial number starts with "A," marked the beginning of this journey. The goal was to create a system that would provide an otherworldly music experience, exceeding expectations even for modern luxury cars, while preserving the interior design without making any modifications to the vehicle, such as drilling holes.
Focusing on the reproduction of mid-high frequencies, which are the core of music, we chose to avoid the commonly lost elements that come from attempting low-end reproduction with small speaker units. This decision led to the adoption of enclosures, which allowed us to eliminate phase filter effects caused by the interference between the front and rear of the speaker units. It also enabled the use of home speakers made from soft edges, dampers, and light, delicate cone paper, which helped soften the extreme sound pressure fluctuations inside the vehicle, creating an environment where hearing fatigue and the risk of hearing loss were minimized.
This decision was key to the development of BassPLUS+, the use of subwoofers, the creation of a rear speaker kit with a similar sound design approach, and innovative DSP settings that created a 3D sound experience, which exceeded the usual four-speaker setups. These innovations, including the realization of an orchestral hall sound in a two-channel source, set the direction for the "Yamaguchi Speaker System" and remain its legacy.
The W126 speaker system, despite being the original model, fully embodied the characteristics of the "Yamaguchi Speaker System." It featured the bright paper cone Fostex FE83-En used in the W126 original and the sweet, gentle tone of the ScanSpeak 5F, used in the W123/W201 models. By 2018, we completed the W126 Series 2 conversion kit to bring the W126's interior a new level of sound.
Although we never expected to develop a new model for the W126, we are thrilled to announce its return in late 2024, just shy of the 34th anniversary of the vehicle's production ending. The new model features the ScanSpeak 10F, renowned from the W124 Series 3. We have also redesigned the baffle board with CFRP and the enclosure with FRP to maximize the performance of this unit, which blends the clarity of monitor speakers with a unique musical expression.
Additionally, for the first time, we've developed a rear speaker kit for the W126. We also created CFRP mounting adapters to accommodate both manual and electric seats, allowing the installation of BassPLUS+.
While we don't expect high sales, we plan to produce only "three sets" by February 2025. We hope that these systems will bring rich music to the lives of passionate W126 owners who see their vehicle as their lifelong companion.
