The W124 speaker system has been a huge hit, delivering approximately 500 sets to W124-loving owners in Japan through three generations: the original "Series 1" launched in 2011, the "Series 2" which was developed to meet requests for a sweet sound that mirrors the speaker units used in the W123/W201 systems, and the current "Series 3" that is still in production.
From the W126 speaker system, which was developed just slightly earlier, we adopted a policy of ensuring the system can be installed without any modifications or alterations to the vehicle, keeping the interior design intact. The goal was to deliver a truly exceptional music experience that far exceeds expectations, even for older cars, and provide an experience unmatched by modern luxury vehicles. This philosophy, shared across all Yamaguchi speaker systems, was rigorously maintained during development.
In the current "Series 3," we’ve achieved a refined audio creation rooted in a foundation of monitor speaker-level precision, while keeping the emphasis on music enjoyment rather than just sound observation.
Moreover, the front speaker sound profile, which has been perfected in this series, forms the core of our work. It was then extended to create rear speakers for the sedan, coupe, and cabriolet models.
For the S124 wagon model, we successfully developed the 3D system. The long, tubular cabin of the S124 presents a unique resonance problem that creates an overpowering, somewhat muffled sound, reminiscent of a concert in a massive dome arena. The S124-3D system was developed to take advantage of these acoustic challenges, turning them into an opportunity. The spacious rear area of the wagon model was fully utilized to create an expansive, thrilling sound experience. The DSP settings created specifically for this system provide a sense of depth and dimensionality, making the S124 the only vehicle in the world to deliver this particular musical experience.
